Gold inlays are the best alternative to those mercury amalgam inlays or for dental restorations.
Whist gold inlays is by far the safest, and oldest in use it is also one of the types of application that has the best longevity.
So in what way is gold better than mercury amalgam? Firstly, gold is a relatively stable substance when used in medical or dental work within our bodies. Teeth with gold inlays never discolour, yet with their mercury amalgam counterparts, you can see the tooth becoming more discoloured and the structure of the tooth breaking down. This is because the mercury corrodes and the toxins get into our bodies through the surrounding soft tissue.
Gold inlays also expand and contract at similar levels as that of a natural tooth. A major benefit of this is that there is less damage to the tooth. Gold has great durability not unlike that of a natural tooth. This helps with the biting force which you use when chewing is not compromised any way, The Gold teeth are comfortable and decease gold doesn’t oxidise, there is no chance of nearby or opposing teeth being damaged. Your gold inlays will not break down the way some of the less expensive alternatives may and you highly polish gold, making it sparkle.
If the tip or end of a tooth is damaged, it can easily get a variation of the gold inlay called the gold onlay. And in some circumstances it can avoid tooth over reduction by every day used crowns and caps.
Gold inlays are made from an alloy which has a very high gold percentage. Although gold is durable, it can be an expensive option for front teeth, although there are some cases where a gold inlay is better suited to reconstruct a badly damaged tooth as opposed to any other material, most notably because that you will get some minor defects with many synthetic alternatives.
