Chrome Dentures are made from cast metal and considered of all the different types of denture to be the one most suited to being used as a permanent partial denture because it is one of the strongest available metals that does not irritate the mouth. Unlike plastic partial dentures which are clipped onto the remaining teeth, whereas the chrome cobalt partial denture actually rests on the teeth.
The clasps ensure the denture remains firm and prevents any damage to your moths soft tissue caused by up and down movement, rubbing or gum irritation. The chrome partial denture is by far vastly superior to plastic partial dentures because your gums will stay healthier because of the strength of your bite and the chewing forces that you use when eating, the pressure is shared between the gums and any teeth which are remaining. In some cases you may be able to have an open palate because with chrome dentures, there is less material covering the soft tissue in your mouth, this also allows you to taste better and improve detection is hot or cold temperatures which in turn, reduces the risk of scalding the mouth.

Because the mouth changes shape, there is no need to worry about your denture going out of shape because there is enough give in each chrome denture to very slightly, adjust itself to the contours of your mouth.
The benefits of Chrome Dentures are:
- Stronger and more durable than standard plastic dentures.
- They allow slimmer and sleeker bases for your dentures when compared to normal acrylic dentures improving comfort and use.
- Excellent choice for partial dentures as they allow more of your mouths palate to be exposed thereby allowing a greater sense of taste when eating.
- Don’t leave a metallic taste in your mouth.
- Chrome dentures are much stronger than acrylic therefore are suitable for people who are unfortunate enough that their dentures break frequently
Cobalt Chrome Dentures – Disadvantages
- They are more expensive than alternative more traditional options
- Difficulties when trying to adjust them
- Difficult to add extra teeth especially if more extractions will be required
- Takes longer to make the dentures
As previously mentioned, the chrome denture will require to be held in place by using metal clasps but there is an alternative method available. We can make tooth coloured acrylic resin which can act as a clasp. The main advantages of this are that the resin is forgiving to the tooth because it’s soft and spongy. The resin based clasp is used in a position that is more to the front of your mouth and because the clasp is coloured to match the remaining teeth, it is less obvious to detection and easily go unnoticed.
